Thelma Vernell Anderson Gibson was born in Coconut Grove, Florida. As a Miami native, Mrs. Gibson had a prolific career in nursing for over 33 years and is the sponsor of the Thelma Gibson Health Initiative, Inc. During this time, she has been a trailblazer in education, mental and physical health, community and professional leadership, volunteerism and community service throughout Miami Dade County. In 1984, founded Miami-Dade County’s first Women’s Chamber of Commerce of Dade County and in 1997, she was appointed as Interim City Commissioner for the City of Miami.
Established in 2001, TGHI programming empowers the underserved populations in Miami-Dade County in particular West Coconut Grove, South Miami and the adjoining Coral Gables communities, to navigate and obtain quality healthcare, psychosocial and social services through existing systems of care. Additionally a component of vocational skills and employability training has been established for clients in need.
